Biotechnology is ground-breaking science that leverages, utilizes, and enhances the natural power of living organisms and ‘biotech beauty’ is an innovative way of harnessing plant organisms for cosmetic benefits. BIOEFFECT was founded by three Icelandic scientists when they discovered, after over a decade of research, a way to use biotechnology to produce plant-based EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor) in barley plants – making it the first and only brand with plant-based growth factors at the time it launched.

BIOEFFECT’s barley is sustainable, uniquely pure and grown in inert volcanic pumice, using geothermal energy and pure Icelandic water enriched with nutrients. Our hydroponic, ecologically-engineered greenhouse can nurture up to 130,000 barley plants at a time and is nestled in the lava fields of Reykjanes Peninsula, only 31 mi from our Headquarters in Reykjavik.

We pride ourselves on the pure science, clean formulations, and proven results. Not only is there award-winning science and technology behind the creation of Barley EGF skincare, but we have conducted over 50 scientific in-house studies, most of which are double-blind placebo-controlled efficacy studies lasting from 2 months up to 3 years. The results of these studies clearly show that topical application of Barley EGF has a powerful and positive effect on skin’s appearance – including boosting hydration, smoothing, firming, and helping support the skin’s natural production of collagen.
